The minimum standard of musicianship is AMEB grade 7 or equivalent.

The audition panel for principal positions in December 2010 will consist of the Musical Director, Concertmaster, and Associate Concertmaster.

The audition panels for rank-and-file positions in December 2010 will consist of the Musical Director, Concertmaster, and the relevant Section Principal.

In the audition, prospective members are expected to present a set of orchestral excerpts that are available for download from www.bpo.org.au/auditions.

Applicants may also be asked to give a short brief about their musical background and personal goals, expectations of the BPO, and how they are able to contribute to the orchestra's community.

All individuals must pay an audition fee and successful candidates must pay membership fees.
